- myxoma virus
-
A poxvirus (see Poxviridae) that causes myxomatosis. Originally isolated from a species of wild rabbit, Sylvilagus, in Brazil, in which it causes a mild non-fatal disease, it was found to be 99% fatal in the European rabbit Oryctylagus. It causes the characteristic, subcutaneous gelatinous swellings, "myxomata" and usually kills in 2-5 days. It has been used to control rabbit populations in Australia and Britain, but there are signs that they have developed immunity.
